Mainly used in the fragrance industry. The distilled oil is also known for its sedative and aphrodisiac effects. It takes around 10,000 lbs of rose petals to distill one pound of oil.

There are some 250 species of rose, and over 10,000 different hybrid varieties. Only three are commonly used for oil extraction.
